About cropping and resizing PDFs

There are two separate jobs here. Crop trims the visible area of the pages, removing wide white margins, scanner borders or printers' crop marks, so the content fills more of the screen when read on a phone or tablet. Crop margins trims the same number of millimetres from the top, right, bottom and left of each page as it is displayed, and the preview shades what will go. Trim white space looks at each page on your device and cuts it to its content, keeping a 2 mm border, so pages with different layouts each get their own crop; blank pages are left alone. Both can apply to every page or only to the pages you list, such as 2-5, 9, so a cover or a wide table can keep its size. Cropping hides the area outside the crop rather than deleting it, so the file size barely changes and the hidden content can be restored by someone with a PDF editor; to remove information for good, use Redact PDF. Resize to A4 or Letter scales every page to that paper size, keeping its proportions and centring it, which helps when a document made in the US needs printing on A4 in the UK, or the reverse, or when pages of different sizes need to match. Text and vector graphics stay sharp when scaled because they are not turned into images.

Crop and resize: frequently asked questions

Does cropping delete the content outside the crop?

No, it hides it. Someone with a PDF editor could restore it, so use Redact PDF for anything private.

How do I convert Letter pages to A4?

Choose A4. Each page is scaled to fit A4 and centred, keeping its proportions.

Can I crop only some pages, or each page differently?

Yes. Choose Only some pages and list them, for example 2-5, 9; the other pages keep their size. Trim white space crops every chosen page to its own content, and you can run the tool again with other margins for other pages.

Will resizing make text blurry?

No. Text and line drawings are scaled as shapes, so they stay sharp at any size.

How do I remove the white border around my pages?

Choose Trim white space. Each page is checked on your device and cropped to its text and pictures, with a small border left.
